In today’s world of health and wellness, gut health has been given a spotlight. With more people realizing the importance of gut health as a part of their overall wellbeing, the demand for gut health dietitians is rising. But what exactly is a gut health dietitian? What do they do, and how can they help someone like you? Keep reading to find out!

In this blog post we will explore what is gut health, what a gut health dietitian is, and how they can help you. Let’s dive in!

What Is Gut Health?

Before delving into what a gut health dietitian is, it is important to understand gut health. The gut refers to our stomach, small intestine, and colon which are responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and removing waste. Gut health refers to the health of the variety of bacteria and yeast that live in our gut (1).

The diversity and makeup of our gut health is an important factor in the development of chronic diseases such as digestive health issues (1). Our gut microbiome health is extremely important for our overall well being.

What Is a Gut Health Dietitian?

Dietitians are regulated healthcare professionals who have university training and on the job training in the field of food and nutrition (2). Dietitians use their knowledge and training to help people understand the connection between food and health, and can provide specific recommendations related to diet, lifestyle and supplements to help manage the nutrition concerns of their clients (3).

The guidance that dietitians provide to their clients is tailored specifically to them to improve their health and relationship with food as much as possible.

Dietitians work in a variety of settings and each have their own areas of expertise. A gut health dietitian is a dietitian who specializes on the topic of gut health. A gut health dietitian works with a variety of clients who experience gastrointestinal issues. Some examples would include, but are not limited to, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Celiac Disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn’s disease and colitis, GERD and gastroparesis.

How Can a Gut Health Dietitian Help You?

Whether you are just curious or you’re experiencing gut issues yourself, here are some ways that the dietitians at Gut Healthy Dietitian can help you!

At Gut Healthy Dietitian, we help manage digestive symptoms and gut health disorders, as well as optimizing gut microbiome health, by blending evidence based research with personalized recommendations (4). We also offer gut microbiome testing, which allows us to:

  • Learn the biomarkers of your gut health
  • Use a personalized approach to nutrition to optimize your gut health
  • Increase the effectiveness of nutrition and lifestyle interventions
  • Identify any imbalances in your gut microbes (dysbiosis)
  • Identify excess quantities of potential negative bacteria

After learning about you and your concerns in a consultation, one of our gut health dietitians will make tailored recommendations that suit your lifestyle. Recommendations can come in the form of tips for the grocery store, recipes, personalized meal plans, supplement recommendations and so much more.

Since lifestyle changes come with their own set of difficulties, our gut health dietitians can provide ongoing support to ensure accountability so that you can have the success you’re looking for.

Gut health dietitians are healthcare professionals that specialize in all things gut health. They strive to have a collaborative relationship with you to provide tailored recommendations that fit into your lifestyle seamlessly.
